As they move into the second half of their first season of MAN v FAT Soccer action, the guys in Mount Laurel have got off to a really positive start.

The four team league has seen the men there lose 217lbs so far and made countless health and wellbeing improvements.

The Mount Laurel members are led by Health & Wellbeing coach Maiya Alston and we caught up with her to find out more about how she’s supporting the men in New Jersey.

What inspired you to get involved with MAN v FAT Soccer and support the men in your area?

I love the idea of being involved with a program that encourages health and wellness. I grew up playing soccer and work in the health field now. Being a part of a program where I can combine two passions was a no brainer.

MAN v FAT encourages a healthy lifestyle, and provides you with the tools and resources to have fun doing so. You are able to be a part of a community all working towards the same goal, and that is something I am proud to be a part of!

How would you describe your coaching and wellbeing style?

My coaching style is providing positive feedback, having friendly competition, and above all else providing an environment that is welcoming and fun. Adopting healthy habits and daily exercise can be challenging especially when this is something that you were not previously doing.

However, I like for people to feel as though they can make changes over time and adapt to a new lifestyle. Once of my favorite quotes is “It’s not about where you start, but about where you finish.”

Whenever you start something new or are getting back into something it can seem daunting, but I want players to feel encouraged and be open about the challenges they face so that we can figure out the best way to work through them and reach their goals.

What kind of community are you hoping to build at your MAN v FAT league?

The community I’m hoping to build is a place where you feel safe and comfortable. Losing weight can present challenges, but being around other players working towards the same goal can provide encouragement to keep pushing towards your own individual goals.

I want our community to feel like a judgement free zone, and be a place where you can form new relationships and learn through shared experiences.

Why should men in the area consider joining this program?

I think men in the area should consider joining our program because we all have the same interests. We all enjoy playing soccer, and can live a healthy lifestyle while doing it. We have a great group of men at Mt. Laurel where we are able to have friendly competition, but also encourage everyone playing.

Our group is very supportive and holds each other accountable. We haven’t been here long but our group is special and we’re always looking to grow our community!
