Family drives Matt onto new challenges

We’d like to introduce you to Matt, from our Sunbury club. He has managed to lose 5 stone, or a quarter of his starting weight since the start of 2025 by scoring goals on the pitch and the scales.

Matt realised that he had to make change over Christmas 2024, after seeing himself in a family photo, saying: “My daughter received an award just before Christmas, but when my wife took a photo of us together, I couldn’t look at it. That’s when I decided something had to change.

“I had seen MAN v FAT Football ads numerous times, but always made excuses as to why I couldn’t do it. Once I’d hit my lowest point, (and ironically my highest weight), I finally bit the bullet and signed up thinking I’d have to wait to join a team. I then received a text a few days later saying I’d be starting that Friday.”

MAN v FAT Football Sunbury provided Matt with a team that helped him to put himself first. The lads at the club supported Matt with his physical and mental health, giving him a support network that was always there to help.

He says: “The support and camaraderie is amazing, I couldn’t have been put in a more supportive group. We motivate each other on and off the pitch. Even if you’re not the best, everyone has the same aim, to lose weight and get healthier. The support you get from others is invaluable.”

Matt took to the pitch at the Sunbury club at the start of 2025, and since then he has seen a remarkable transformation, having broken through his 25% weight loss target.

He explains some of the changes he has made which helped him to get where he is, saying: “I was never much of a runner before, but now I’ve managed to reach my personal fitness goal of running a 5k. Eventually, I’d like to try a 10k, maybe even in public! My mental health has improved significantly.

“I am sleeping a lot better which in turn has reduced my stress levels, and bettered my health.”

Matt has managed to smash his fitness goals, picking up awards and accolades along the way. On the pitch, and on the scales, he proved himself a champion. He says: “At the end of the first season with my team, I was awarded prizes for top scorer, and Amazing Loser. At the end of this season I was awarded biggest loser, having reached my 25% weight loss target!”

Well done Matt!
