Being present for your children is often a key reason why many men get involved with MAN v FAT.

Whether it’s being able to keep up as they run around the garden or aiming to ensure you’re around for many years to come, kids are a key inspiration within the MAN v FAT community.

That was certainly the case for James Rutledge, who has enjoyed great success at MAN v FAT Watford.

He told us: “My children are the main reason I’m doing this. I want to see them grow up and to be able to be active with them and MAN v FAT is helping me achieve these goals. I’m also aiming to run a 10k with my son by the end of the year.

“I’m aiming to reach 80kg which is my ideal bodyweight and to build some positive wellbeing goals i.e. to continue to eat healthily and play football for a veterans team on a Sunday.”

James joined MAN v FAT Watford in January 2025 and has had a remarkable start to his time on the programme, as he approaches 15% weight loss having shifted over 15kg so far.

But what has been the secret to his success?

He told us: “I’m helped by the support from a great group of guys who all have a love of football and a goal to lose weight.

“Not only is it the result on the pitch that matters but also on the scales which for me has helped keep me focused on losing weight as we can still win a match even if we lose.

“The connections and support you get from everyone involved are fantastic, MAN v FAT Watford is more than just meeting once a week, they have a park run group, a dedicated Sunday League team and people who care and support each other.

“The laughs and jokes keep me going and no one judges if you have a bad week on the scales.”

The Watford group continues to flourish and James is urging other local men to think about getting started, saying: “It will be the best decision you ever make.

“Don’t be nervous or worried about being judged, everyone is there to support and welcome you. Come along for a taster session and you will love it!”
