The arrival of May marks the start of National Walking Month, and getting on the move can play a big part in your health and wellbeing.
Whether it’s a morning stroll or a regular 5k to keep you going, getting off your chair and getting out and about can play a big part in your general health.
During his time as a MAN v FAT Bury member, Chris Oldfield certainly felt the benefit of regular walking alongside his MAN v FAT sessions.
Chris lost over 20% of his body weight with MAN v FAT and said: “Having lost weight with MAN v FAT, my longer health term and wellbeing goals are to continue with my improved healthier eating habits, try new healthy options for a more balanced diet and not go back to my old ways.
“I have also developed a liking for taking brisk walks without my phone in the evenings. I feel this has helped not only my physical but mental health.”
As he looks back at his weight loss with MAN v FAT, Chris found inspiration on the programme and discovered new ways in which to develop his weight loss habits.

He explained: “When I wanted to start losing weight, it felt quite overwhelming as there’s so many ways to do it and I just wanted a way that didn’t feel ‘regimental’.
“When I saw the poster for MAN v FAT, I knew this could work as I enjoyed playing football in the past, wanted to get back into playing and if I could lose weight, even better.
“When starting, I didn’t realise the benefits that worked for me such as the food and exercise tracking which got me into improved habits and feeling like I was not only losing weight for myself, but for the team (doing my part each week to help).”

The MAN v FAT Bury club has helped guys lose plenty of weight since it got started, supported by funded places from Bury Council.
Chris added: “Everybody no matter what team you are on is supportive as we are all heading towards to same goal of better health improvement. I could chat to people on a Tuesday night before and after playing my match and be social which made everything more fun and enjoyable. Also using Whatsapp for the teams and community groups was great for help, advice and to keep you going.
“If you really want to improve your health and enjoy football (no matter how good you are), MAN v FAT is a great weight loss programme to get involved with. The community is great and everyone is here to support each other, but remember it’s weight loss with football not the other way round!”
