The World Cup is in full swing and both England and Scotland are on track to progress out of the group stages.

The tournament will pick up pace in the next couple of weeks and players from our MAN v FAT Maidenhead club will be watching on with interest to see who picks up the Jules Rimet trophy.

The lads there have run their own World Cup sweepstake to raise funds for the Sport in Mind charity.

And Ben George, who was the brains behind the sweepstake, said it has been well received by the players there.

He told us: “My inspiration was wanting to get the whole club together and involved in an event which would encourage social interaction, competition and the opportunity to raise money for charity.

“The community spirit is fantastic at the club. The guys have set up a football session on a Wednesday which there is always competitive to get a slot. Most of them stick around on a Friday to continue playing and often arrange meet ups for a drink at the pub (tracked of course) or to watch the local football team Maidenhead United.”

Sport in Mind‘s mission is to transform the nation’s mental health through sport and their trailblazing work harnesses the power of sport to inspire, educate, and promote good mental health.

And selecting the was an important part of Ben’s plans to raise funds during the World Cup.

He added: “Mental health is incredibly important and I know that between guys, it isn’t spoken about enough so it’s good to be able to encourage that.

“I joined MAN v FAT after a serious mental health crisis, and had cut myself off from everyone. MAN v FAT helped me rebuild my life and my confidence and I’ve seen first hand the positive impact the programme and how the guys at Maidenhead contribute.

“Having made positive steps, my long time goals are to stay healthy physically and mentally, whilst as coach, being there to support the guys at the club to achieve their goals as well as giving them an outlet should they need it.”
