With our Amazing Losers game on the horizon, we’re spending the days leading up to kick off meeting the lads who’ll be pulling on the shirts in this year’s game at Walsall FC. Next, we meet Gavin Cliff from our Hull club!

Tell us more about your initial reasons for joining MAN v FAT

I joined MAN v FAT as soon as the COVID restrictions were lifted. I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety for most of my life, and during that period my weight had really spiralled. I knew I couldn’t keep ignoring it – I needed to take control and make a change.

If you could go back in time and talk to the version of you at the start of your weight loss efforts, what would you tell them about the changes you’ve experienced?

If I could go back to the start, I’d tell myself it’s going to change far more than just your weight. At the beginning I was anxious. Nervous. I didn’t really socialise much and my circle was small. I kept myself to myself. What I didn’t expect was to become part of something bigger – an extended family. I learned how to open up. I learned how to trust people. I learned how powerful it is to work as a team towards a common goal instead of battling things on your own.

The weight loss mattered, of course. But the confidence, the friendships, and the sense of belonging mattered more. I’d tell that earlier version of me: You’re not just changing your body. You’re building your tribe. And that will change everything.

Who would you like to thank for their help in your progress?

From day one, Alan made me feel welcome. That meant more than people probably realised, especially with where my mental health was at the time. Walking into something new when you’re anxious and unsure of yourself isn’t easy, but he made that first step feel safe. Clint, now Assistant Coach, was exactly the same. And Dave, who was assistant coach back then, too. They didn’t just run sessions, they created an environment where you felt included. That welcome changed everything for me. It helped me open up. It helped me stay. And it helped me grow.

What are your future hopes around your health and wellbeing?

As an Assistant Coach and BMI lead, I’m committed to continuing in both roles and giving back properly. This programme has done a lot for me personally. I’ve seen first-hand what structure, accountability and proper support can achieve. Because of that, I want to keep helping as many lads as possible on their own journey, whether that’s weight loss, confidence, fitness, or just feeling better week to week.

How much are you looking forward to the game in May?

It’s a secret!
